Year inducted into the ACTA Hall of Fame: 2005

19 December 1930 - February 2002

Sperry started at an early age shooting tin cans on his fathers farm at Bridgewater, Tasmania. With his brother Paul and during his teen years, they did a lot of bush shooting which prepared them for target shooting.

Sperry was a natural shot and as the years went on, his shooting went from strength to strength. He was very cool under pressure. It was rare for him to be beaten in a shoot off.

He represented Australia at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In a practice session prior to the games, he shot 198/200 targets equalling the world record.

1974 he participated at the World championships in Berne, Germany.

He held the longest break in Tasmania of 496 targets up until 2009. Sperry and his brother Paul, are the only two Tasmanians to reach the old handicap mark of 27 yards. They often competed together and are the only two brothers to win the Champion of Champions event twice each. Together they have won over 46 Deauville Doubles championships. A formiddable team. He represented Tasmania every year at the national Trap Championships except four from 1951. He won too many championships to list.

He was a member of the Hobart gun club for 50 years and he was inducted into the Tasmanian Sport Hall of Fame in 1987.
