How To Start Up A Club

Welcome to the Australian Clay Target Association information page on starting a new club.

Requirements
Firstly you will require a recommendation from your zone and then your state. If you contact your State administrator they will be able to put you in contact with the zone. A letter will need to be sent to the ACTA from the State recommending your affiliation and we will then commence affiliation with the ACTA. There is an annual affiliation fee.
Please click here to download the How to Affiliate a New Club Information Sheet

If you have not yet contacted the Firearms Registry in your state regarding regulations we recommend you start with them. To visit the Firearms Registry website in your respective State; see the links below:

A separate application form is required for a club if they wish to acquire guns for use by club members. Application is to be made by the club secretary or a nominated club member as the licence holder.

Firearms Safety Training Instuctor Approval
This will allow persons, on behalf of an approved club, association or organization, to conduct firearms safety training for longarms in accordance with an approved firearms safety training course. Applicants must hold a current (longarm) firearms licence and have held it for a minimum of three years.

Form P644 - application for firearms safety training instructor (longarms).

Form P650 - this form must be completed by all unlicenced applicants before they can possess and use a firearm in accordance with the NSW Firearms Act 1996. Return the form to the club or range official or the instructor upon completion.

We are able to supply layouts/plans for trap and skeet including skeet and trap house dimensions. The current ACTA Rules are available online.

Any further enquiries please contact the Australian Clay Target Association on 02 6938 2121.

How to Become a Member

Welcome to the Australian Clay Target Association (ACTA), information page on becoming a member.

To contact your nearest club to see what is involved with clay target shooting, click on the map of Australia on our home page and this will link you through to your nearest club and association list. Most clubs have provisions for non-shooters to come and try the sport, which may include the use of a loan gun. However, to shoot regularly you must obtain a firearms license and join a club.

The Police in each state issue firearms licenses and unfortunately the requirements for each state vary. Click on the link below to take you to the Firearms Registry for your state. That registry will have details on what you need to do to obtain a firearms license.

Residents of the ACT can contact Firearms Registry in Canberra at https://www.police.act.gov.au/safety-and-security/firearms or contact the NSW Firearms Registry.

Once you have joined a club you can then participate in club shoots, practice days and any other shoots held by the ACTA affiliated clubs. Should you wish to buy a gun, members of the Committee of your local club can advise you on the type you require and where to purchase one locally. Your state Firearms Registry will be able to tell you what the legal requirements are to buy a gun in your state.

Your club membership will include membership to the ACTA. When you join your club the ACTA will issue you with:

1. A receipt will be issued and it will remain attached on your My Page for printing. A letter can be requested if needed as proof of membership.

2. You can download the ACTA Member App.

3. An ACTA badge (depending on category when joining).

4. The current ACTA rules can be downloaded from our website.

5. A monthly copy of the Clay Target Shooting News, the official journal of the ACTA (E-news only).

For further enquiries regarding joining a clay target club or the Australian Clay Target Association, contact us on 02 6938 2121 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
